How much are hidden reasoning tokens costing you?

Reasoning models emit thousands of hidden “thinking” tokens per call — billed at the output rate. See the surcharge they add over the visible cost, per call and per month.

What this calculator does

Estimates the surcharge that hidden reasoning (thinking) tokens add to a reasoning model call. Thinking tokens are billed at the output rate, so this shows the effective cost per call and per month versus the naive visible-only estimate.

Why use it
  • Reasoning models emit 5k-20k hidden thinking tokens per call — the headline price hides most of the bill
  • Thinking tokens bill at the OUTPUT rate, the most expensive token class
  • Shows the surcharge as a percent, a thinking:visible multiple, and dollars/month of pure thinking
  • Model prices come live from pricing-data, not hardcoded

How we got this estimate

💡Reasoning tokens bill at the output rate. A model that emits 8k thinking tokens for a 500-token answer is paying for 16× the visible output — the headline price hides most of the bill.

Your model, token mix, and reasoning volume → effective $/call + monthly surcharge.

Hint: How many calls per month.
Hint: Words sent in per call.
Hint: Words in the visible answer per call.
Hint: Hidden 'thinking' words per call - you pay for these too.
Hint: Share of calls that actually reason, as a %.

Methodology

  • All prices are USD per 1 million tokens, current as of 2026-07-21.
  • Vendor-published values have no mark. Inferred/extrapolated values are marked with * and listed below.
  • Batch API discounts are 50% off standard rates across providers that offer Batch mode.
  • Prompt caching discounts vary by provider (typically 80-90% off cached input tokens).
  • Regional data-residency surcharges (Anthropic 1.1x, OpenAI 1.1x, Google regional tiers) are NOT included in base rates.
  • Long-context pricing tiers apply when input exceeds model threshold.
  • Embedding prices are input-only (no output tokens generated).
