The story

Reasoning tokens are the part of the bill nobody quotes. A reasoning model thinks before it answers, emitting thousands of hidden tokens that are billed at the output rate - the most expensive token class.

The visible answer might be 500 tokens; the thinking behind it can be 8,000. That is 16x the visible output, so the real cost per call is many times the naive estimate built from the headline price.

Dana's workflow: on a $25/1M-output model, 8k reasoning tokens per call add roughly +900% over the visible-only cost. The fix is not always a cheaper model - it is fewer reasoning tokens (lower effort) and routing only the hard calls to the reasoning path.
