The story

The 5x / 20x ladder is now industry standard. ChatGPT, Claude, Google and Cursor all sell a ~$100 (5x) and ~$200 (20x) power tier at nearly identical price points - so the price tells you nothing.

Sam's problem is the unit. '20x Pro usage' isn't a number you can bank. Only some tiers quote a real value - Cursor Ultra, for example, gives a literal $400 of API usage for $200. The rest sell a multiplier with no dollar figure attached.

Reading your result

Dollar-denominated tiers win on clarity. A tier that says '$400 of usage' can be compared and budgeted. A tier that says '20x' cannot - not until you know your own token mix.

The multiplier hides the base. '20x Pro' means 20x of a usage cap most vendors never publish. The real ceiling is opaque by design.

Same price, different value. Four vendors at ~$200 is not four equal options - one may hand you a measurable budget while another hands you a marketing number.

Match the tier to your models. When values aren't comparable, the deciding factor is which vendor's models you actually use day to day.

What "good" looks like:
