Guides → Playground & Guide → Open-Source Model Finder - Browse Open-Weight Models by Price, License, and Jurisdiction
Meet Sam Okafor. Staff engineer evaluating an open-weight model to cut API spend. "Which open-weight model is cheapest for my job AND has a license and jurisdiction I can actually ship?"
🔥 Found a cheap model. Then discovered the license blocked commercial use, or the only endpoint was in the wrong jurisdiction.
Open-weight models are the biggest cost lever in 2026 - if you can navigate license and jurisdiction. The catalog now spans GLM, Qwen, Kimi, DeepSeek, MiniMax, Llama, Mistral and more, at a fraction of frontier API prices. But 'open' isn't one thing: licenses range from fully permissive (MIT, Apache) to commercial-use-restricted, and hosted endpoints sit in different jurisdictions. The cheapest model is useless if its license or hosting blocks your use case.
Sam's job is to cut a six-figure API bill. The price column gets him a shortlist fast - but the deciding factors are the license (can he use it commercially, modify it, redistribute) and the jurisdiction (where does the data go on a hosted endpoint, and can he self-host to neutralize that). This finder puts all three on one screen so the shortlist is shippable, not just cheap.
Filter by what actually gates the decision. Sort by price to find the value leaders, then filter by license to keep only commercially-usable models, and read the jurisdiction note to flag anything that needs self-hosting. The result is a short list you can take to legal and ship.
This tool browses the live open-weight catalog enriched with per-model governance - price, capability tier, license, origin, and data jurisdiction, all in one place.
Open the full calculator. Pick a model, enter your tokens, see per-call, daily, monthly, and annual cost.
🚀 Open the full calculator →Browse every open-weight model (GLM, Qwen, Kimi, DeepSeek, MiniMax, Llama, Mistral, and more) by price, capability tier, license, and data jurisdiction. Find the cheapest open model that fits your governance constraints.
Each input shapes the cost. Click an input on the calculator to set it. The explanations below match the live calculator field by field.
Price gets you the shortlist; license and jurisdiction make it shippable. Start from the cheapest, then rule out anything whose license or hosting you can't use.
Capability tier is the quality guardrail. Each model carries a tier from the labs' own published benchmarks - match it to the task before you commit.
Self-hosting changes the jurisdiction answer. Open weights run in your own region remove the data-jurisdiction concern while keeping the cost advantage - the note flags where that applies.
Honest limitations. Every model is wrong; some are useful. Where this one falls short:
For these, use: Chinese vs Western Cost to price an open model against your current frontier model. Self-Host Breakeven to price self-hosting the weights.
The gaps we just listed are real, and they are the expensive ones: your actual prompts, your switching cost, your MLOps overhead. An AICost expert spends the hour on your AI and cloud costs, not a generic playbook. You leave with a written report: the way forward, in 30 days of concrete steps.
Not sure yet? The $39 AICost Blueprint credits toward a Session, and the Session fee credits toward any plan. You never pay twice for the same ground. See all pricing →
You have seen the shape of it. Open the calculator with your model, your tokens, your volume.
🚀 Open the full calculator →Put an open-weight pick head-to-head with your Western frontier model on your tokens.
Should you self-host it? →Price self-hosting the open weights to neutralize jurisdiction.
Cheapest capable model per task →Three questions to the cheapest model that clears your quality bar.

Why this matters: pricing for major vendors has dropped 40-90% in the last 24 months. A budget set 12 months ago is probably wrong by 30%+.
