Guides → Playground & Guide → Gateway Stage Advisor - Does This Client Even Need a Router?
Meet Dan Whitfield. vCIO at a 40-client MSP. "A vendor is pitching intelligent routing. Which of my clients actually needs it, and what do I tell the rest?"
Stage 1, Direct. One provider, one model. Fine for a pilot. No budget control, no failover, nothing to show an auditor.
Stage 2, Gateway. Unified keys, budgets, logging, rate limits, failover. No intelligent routing.
Stage 3, Policy routing. Models assigned by workload, department or risk class. Fixed, explainable, auditable.
Stage 4, Dynamic routing. Every request evaluated and routed. Real at volume, and frequently smaller than caching and batch tiers combined.
Open the full calculator. Pick a model, enter your tokens, see per-call, daily, monthly, and annual cost.
🚀 Open the full calculator →Four stages from direct calls to dynamic routing, with the break-even derived from your client's own spend rather than quoted from a blog post.
The stage tells the client what to buy and, more usefully, what not to.
Net monthly is gross saving minus router fee minus your operating cost. The third term is the one MSPs forget.
Blocked-by names the missing prerequisite, so the conversation is about fixing that rather than about the product.
Honest limitations. Every model is wrong; some are useful. Where this one falls short:
The gaps we just listed are real, and they are the expensive ones: your actual prompts, your switching cost, your MLOps overhead. An AICost expert spends the hour on your AI and cloud costs, not a generic playbook. You leave with a written report: the way forward, in 30 days of concrete steps.
Not sure yet? The $39 AICost Blueprint credits toward a Session, and the Session fee credits toward any plan. You never pay twice for the same ground. See all pricing →
You have seen the shape of it. Open the calculator with your model, your tokens, your volume.
