Guides → Playground & Guide → Open-Weight Hosting Cost Compare - Serverless Hosts and Self-Host GPU Crossover
Meet Dana Okafor. Founder/CTO at a seed-stage AI product scaling its first real traffic. "We're on one serverless host out of habit. Are we overpaying versus another host, and at what point should we just rent a GPU?"
🔥 The monthly inference bill doubled two months running. Nobody has actually priced the alternatives - it's all anecdote.
The same open-weight model can cost very different amounts depending on who serves it. DeepInfra, Fireworks, Together, Novita and Groq all host the popular open-weight models, but their per-token prices diverge - sometimes by more than a third on the same family. Most teams pick one host early and never re-check, which is exactly how a bill drifts.
Dana's product runs a single open-weight model at growing volume. The first question is simply which host is cheapest at her actual token mix - and that depends on the input/output split and whether her traffic caches well. This calc prices her workload across every host at once, so the cheapest option is a fact, not a guess.
The second question is when to stop paying per token at all. Above a certain volume, renting a dedicated GPU 24/7 is cheaper than serverless - Fireworks itself puts the graduation point near 500,000 tokens/minute. The calc computes that crossover for the cheapest available GPU, so Dana knows the volume at which self-hosting starts to win.
It is a planning tool: exact curated prices for the two hosts we track closely (DeepInfra, Fireworks), the nightly feed for the rest, and a transparent crossover with the one throughput assumption left in your hands.

The cheapest host depends on your token mix. An output-heavy workload ranks hosts differently than an input-heavy one. Always read the table at your real input percentage, not a default.
Cached input can change the ranking. If your traffic reuses prompts, turn on cached-input rates - the host with the best cache price may leapfrog the headline-cheapest one.
The crossover is about volume, not preference. Below the breakeven, serverless wins on simplicity and price; above it, a dedicated GPU is cheaper but you own the ops. The number tells you which regime you are in.
Honest limitations. Every model is wrong; some are useful. Where this one falls short:
For these, use: Inference Serving Cost for a deeper self-host serving model. Jurisdiction Risk Scorer to check a host is acceptable for your data.
The gaps we just listed are real, and they are the expensive ones: your actual prompts, your switching cost, your MLOps overhead. An AICost expert spends the hour on your AI and cloud costs, not a generic playbook. You leave with a written report: the way forward, in 30 days of concrete steps.
Not sure yet? The $39 AICost Blueprint credits toward a Session, and the Session fee credits toward any plan. You never pay twice for the same ground. See all pricing →
You have seen the shape of it. Open the calculator with your model, your tokens, your volume.
