Guides → Playground & Guide → GPU Spot Savings - Is Spot Worth the Interruption Risk?
Meet Sam Iyer. Infra engineer deciding spot vs on-demand for a fine-tune. "Spot is way cheaper per hour, but interruptions waste compute. At our checkpoint cadence, does spot still come out ahead?"
🔥 Last run got preempted twice and re-ran from an old checkpoint. Was it still cheaper, or did we lose the savings?
Spot is ~3x cheaper per GPU-hour - but every interruption restarts work since the last checkpoint, adding overhead. The question is whether the overhead eats the discount.
There's a clean breakeven: spot wins until your restart overhead exceeds (on-demand/spot - 1). With a 3x discount that's ~200% overhead - so spot almost always wins for checkpoint-friendly jobs.
Here are the inputs that move the result the most. Play with the sliders and check it out. The number updates live.
Spot / preemptible GPUs vs on-demand for the same hours. GPU type defaults to 8×H100 (p5) in the teaser.
💡Savings = the spot discount on your base hours, minus the waste from interruptions. More idle waste eats into the savings.

Context: Spot H100 runs ~$0.34-1.5/hr vs $2.3-3.1 neocloud on-demand and $7.4-8 hyperscaler (Jul 2026) - interruption-tolerant jobs capture 50-85% savings.

The gaps we just listed are real, and they are the expensive ones: your actual prompts, your switching cost, your MLOps overhead. An AICost expert spends the hour on your AI and cloud costs, not a generic playbook. You leave with a written report: the way forward, in 30 days of concrete steps.
Not sure yet? The $39 AICost Blueprint credits toward a Session, and the Session fee credits toward any plan. You never pay twice for the same ground. See all pricing →
